Tell us about your business!

I run an online Interior Design Studio also known as Edesign.  You get the one-on-one custom Interior Design experience without the high price tag and a quicker turn-around.  I specialize in comforting and relaxing Interiors for home and therapeutic spaces.

What were you doing before you started your business?

Before I started my Interior Design business I owned a custom cake business called Pleasant Cakes. I was open for about 9 years  and shut it down to take care of my kids who were much younger at the time.

What made you want to do this, and how did you get started?

Since I was young I have always had a creative mind. I was always drawn to art, DIY crafts, cake decorating, but mostly Interior Design. When my youngest started school I enrolled in courses for Interior Design.  It took me a little while after I Graduated to figure out what direction I wanted to go in. I love colors, fabrics, furniture and textiles but I really wanted it all to also have a deeper meaning.

My youngest who is now 6 has been dealing with sensory overload since she was about 2 years old.  Through those years we have learnt what can over stimulate her and what soothes her.  Her surroundings play such a big role in her day to day life.  She is always gravitating towards calming and comfortable spaces.

What does a typical day look like for your Interior Design business?

A typical day for me would be to get my kids off to school and then work on the business.  I am always working on new design boards, social media and my website.  Some days will start with a zoom consultation with a client or end with a custom design plan being sent out.

Where do you want to end up / what goals do you want to achieve?

I think the greatest part of starting a project or a business is the surprise of where it can take you.  I hope with my creativity and passion I can make my way to some really great projects.  My goal is to be able to work form home full time while still being present for my kids.

What are some of the more memorable obstacles that you’ve had to overcome?

I have had to overcome and push through the emotions of starting a new business up again.  With that comes fear of failure, fear of putting myself out there and proving myself and my family wrong.  I could have easily gone back to the comfort of creating and selling cakes but I knew that was not where my true passion was.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to start their own business?

My advice to those just starting out would be to be patient with yourself.  Taking an idea and turning it into a business takes time.  Doing all the behind work, creating the website, forming a business plan are all important  steps.  Also, give yourself some grace if it is taking longer than you had expected and do not try to compete or compare yourselves to those who are already years ahead into their business.  It is easy to get discouraged when you feel like you are so far behind especially in a world of social media but remember you started this for a reason and at a time you were meant to start this journey.
